BOTOX + FILLERS Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is an injectable treatment that reduces the appearance of dynamic wrinkles resulting from repeated muscle movements. When injected into a specific muscle, Botox causes temporary paralyzation. The muscle can’t contract, so the skin on top stops creasing. Botox treatment can help smooth out existing wrinkles and prevent new lines.

What types of wrinkles can Botox treat?

Botox can treat expression lines, or dynamic wrinkles, such as:

  • Forehead lines

  • Crow’s feet

  • Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)

  • Bunny lines on the nose

  • Platysmal bands in the neck

  • Vertical lip lines

  • Gummy smile

In addition, Botox can also create a temporary brow lift for a more youthful appearance.

What is the difference between Botox and other neurotoxins?

Botox is a popular treatment for many of the same types of wrinkles that other neurotoxins treat. While Botox is the brand you hear most often, Dysport is another kind of neurotoxin that may be able to treat broader areas. However, the formula is less potent and more fluid than Botox (but it works well in large areas like the forehead).

Botox is also an excellent treatment for those who are no longer seeing the results they want with other cosmetic treatments. Many people respond well to Botox.

On the other hand, Xeomin is another neurotoxin which is closer to Botox. It may be the best treatment depending on your needs. Mrs. Belfon can discuss whether Botox or another neurotoxin is best for your particular goals.

How long does Botox last?

Botox results typically appear within one to two weeks*. Though, like other neurotoxins, results from Botox fade gradually. This treatment is safe and minimally invasive, so you can return to Belfon Health and Aesthetics for routine injections to maintain your results.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Before injecting Botox into your skin, Mrs. Belfon applies a topical numbing cream to minimize any pain or discomfort you may experience. Botox injections are quick and relatively painless compared to more invasive procedures.

What are fillers?

Fillers are gel-like substances that restore fullness to the face. As you age, your collagen levels start to deplete. Collagen is a protein that helps build your connective tissues. It keeps your skin firm and resilient in your youth.

Without high levels of collagen, your skin loses its youthful volume. The dermal structure that supports this volume also starts to lose its hold. As a result, tissue begins to collect lower in the face, creating excess or saggy skin.

Dermal fillers return this lost volume to fill in hollowed cheeks, smooth deep wrinkles, plump thin lips, and contour your face.

Do fillers treat all types of wrinkles?

Fillers primarily treat static wrinkles, which result from volume loss. Some of the most common uses for fillers include:

  • Smoothing nasolabial folds and marionette lines

  • Contouring the jawline and cheekbones

  • Plumping up thin lips

  • Improving the appearance of depressed scars

  • Removing dark circles under the eyes

Unlike other treatments, dermal fillers don’t target dynamic wrinkles — lines that form from repeated muscle movement — so Belfon Health and Aesthetics typically recommends Dysport® or Xeomin® to treat crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and other types of expression lines.

What can I expect from treatment using fillers?

Belfon Health and Aesthetics offers several popular fillers, including Versa®, Versa Lips, Belotero®, and Radiesse®. Mrs. Belfon performs a comprehensive skin evaluation to determine the best type of filler for you. She may also recommend using the in-house skin care analysis machine to identify damage beneath the skin and create a customized treatment plan for you.

When you arrive for your treatment, she applies a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Next, she injects the medication into predetermined areas to restore volume in the cheeks, lips, and other areas of the face and body. Your results are instantly noticeable, so you can see fuller, plumper skin right away.

How long do fillers last?

Most dermal fillers last for at least 6 to 12 months before gradually fading. To maintain your results, you can return to Belfon Health and Aesthetics for touch-up treatments. You can also extend your results by combining your treatment with other procedures, such as microneedling, facials, chemical peels, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
